District 2 Issues

Chamber of Commerce Q&A

Citywide Issues:

Committed to a Vibrant Downtown

Business Support:

Businesses will locate in areas, such as downtown, if they have adequate infrastructure (parking, utilities, services). We need:
  • Viable and equitable parking plan
  • Greater promotion and expansion of alternative transportation options to downtown (bike paths, public transportation)

Vibrant Community Space:

The economic vitality of downtown is fostered by attending to the quality of community space (squares, trails, galleries, parks, theaters, library, etc.) and inclusive programming. City resources should:
  • Promote partnerships between businesses, community organizations and service agencies to enrich public space and expand programming

Living Space:

Downtown living has expanded dramatically, with that we need to ensure that the quality and character of our community is maintained. We need to:
  • Promote more "full-time" residents downtown to balance student housing
  • Support affordable housing options to ensure a greater socioeconomic range
Committed to Proper Infrastructure

Utilities:

There must be a balance between the cost of infrastructure and the overall net gain of our investment in such a venture. With improvements we must also:
  • Explore the feasibility of community and household water conservation and efficiency approaches
  • Include public education campaigns to reduce waste
  • Consider subsidies for energy-efficient showerheads, and rainwater conservation

Street Corridors:

The streets we have should be functional, structurally sound and as safe as possible. When those conditions do not exist, we need to move quickly to correct the situation.

Sidewalks:

There are places throughout the city in need of safe walking paths - such as along North Dunn and to schools in Kinser and Arlington Rd. A balance must be struck between safety for our citizens and the rights of property owners.

Committed to Responsible Growth & Economic Vitality

Growth Management

When a business - such as RCA/Thompson - closes down, we should first look at how the newly vacant site could be made attractive to a new user and what infrastructure (utilities, communications, etc.) is needed to redevelop the site before moving on to new areas.

I am in favor of incentives and tax abatements to locally owned businesses where the money stays in the community. I am not in favor of rubber stamping tax abatements and incentives for national retail chains and large corporations that send revenues out of our community and sustain profits through low wages - this does not support local growth and a healthy local economy at all.

Committed to Social Justice

Supporting Social Agencies and Advocacy Group

One of the fundamental functions of government is to assure the welfare of people. It's at the core of our principles. Bloomington has extraordinary social service agencies - nationally recognized agencies like Middle Way House, CASA, Community Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, and growing organizations like My Sister's Closet and Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, need our support.

Committed to Community Character

A Beautiful and Special Place

Bloomington is a beautiful and special place. The quality of the community is the result of the hard work of not just a handful of business and community leaders but the dedication and commitment of countless residents. We can work together to assure the continuation of what makes Bloomington so special.

District 2 Issues:

Committed to a Safe Path to Schools

Basic Safety

We should be expected to afford basic safety to those children who walk to their local school. There are places throughout the city in need of safe walking paths for students to move safely from home to school and back.

Committed to the Environment

Griffy Watershed

Effective management and maintenance to the Griffy Lake Watershed will insure it continues to serve as a recreation site in this community for many more years to come.

Committed to Proper Planning

Construction Traffic on Dunn

The expansion of Meadowood will make a significant difference to the residents. The construction, however, should not do damage to the recent upgrades made to North Dunn Street. Proper planning and management can protect our past investments while allowing for the growth in new services.

Widening of 46 Bypass

The benefits to the community since the completion of the St Route 46 Bypass are obvious. It is a vital East-West connector, as well as a North- South connector. We must plan and manage the affects on Bloomington during the State's upgrade of this important roadway.

Impact of I-69

There is still much to be decided on the outcome of the plans to build a new terrain Interstate through southern Indiana. Careful thought and a commitment to understanding our options will help lead to sound decisions on the plans for this new roadway.

Committed to People

Social Agency Support

We have neighbors and friends within the 2nd District that have a need for adequate social agency support. The citizens of Bloomington have clearly demonstrated their support of the critical services these agencies provide.
